Treldehuset Fredericia, Denmark
Treldehuset is a holiday home located right on the Vejle Fjord on a scenic site with well-established pine trees. At first glance, the house appears traditional, with a pitched roof running parallel to the site's length and a gable facing the view. However, it is a kind of double house – a house concealed inside a bigger house – an idea that suggests a Russian matryoshka doll.
The effect of a double house is achieved by placing the thermal envelope beneath and inside a bigger house. In this way, a roofed outdoor area occurs between the thermal envelope, the actual house and the larger shell, which gives access to a protected area – a continuation of the interior which allows you, even on rainy summer nights, to eat, grill or maybe clean a newly caught fish. This transitional zone between indoor and outdoor is an interesting space, with characteristic trees and a view of the fjord.
The heated part of the house is divided into two parallel spaces running along the narrow site. To the west, the common rooms of the house, including the kitchen, dining area and living room, are placed corresponding to the widest part of the outdoor area. The smaller rooms, such as the bathroom, utility room and guest room, are placed on the eastern side. All the rooms are regular and private, but the bedroom with a view of the fjord can be opened towards the living room.
The house is covered with dark slates on both the roof and the facades, and thus appears as a single-material frame. This exterior shell is lined with Douglas fir and is outlined by aluminium profiles. The interior is characterised by a white finish, concrete, and Douglas fir sheathing, creating a strong connection between the roofed patio and the interior. On warm summer days, the large sliding glass doors can be pushed aside, connecting the living room and the terrace.
